Dr. Bongle Dear Adler Families,
The 2017-2018 school year has come to an end, and what a great year it was! From the first day of school, to the Gator Gallop, to the Marriott Field Trip to Field Day….we have had some fun times. The staff is truly grateful for the time we get to spend with your children and hope you all have a relaxing summer with family and friends. Before you know it, we will be back here again for another great year of learning! Congratulations to Mrs. Zeinz for being nominated for the 2018 Regional Office of Education’s Excellence in Character award. This award was presented to Mrs. Zeinz at our Recognition Assembly last week and was given to her for outstanding character and for being such a great role model for her students each and every day. Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Zeinz for this recognition! With the year coming to an end, we have several staffing changes proposed for the next school year. Mrs. Adelman will be taking a one-year leave of absence to stay home with her beautiful baby girl. We will miss her greatly in second grade, but know she will have a wonderful year playing the role of Mom full-time. Taking Mrs. Adelman’s place for the year is Mrs. Turner who is going to move back down to 2nd grade. Mrs. Turner is excited to return to 2nd grade again after her one year stint in 3rd grade. We sadly have to say goodbye to several staff members changing buildings for next year. Mrs. Monahan will be joining Rockland School next year, and Miss Schnarr and Mrs. Patterson will be joining the Butterfield staff. We wish them luck in the new roles but know they will not be strangers. Mrs. Lisa Piskule will be returning to 5th grade after her one-year leave of absence and we are thrilled to have her back at Adler Park teaching again with Mr. De Paz. Finally, we say good-bye to Mrs. Beadle after 10 years of service to D70 and wish her luck in her new chapter of her life. She will be missed each day but the Adler doors will always be open to her to return! Thank you to the AFA for all their hard work this year on many different events and projects! A special thank you to Wendy Bownas and Nancy Ryan for their time as the AFA Co-Presidents. Many, many hours have been spent working on AFA events and all those events make Adler a better school so we truly thank them for their commitment to making Adler the best school around! We thank all the AFA members for their hard work this year and look forward to planning exciting events for the 18-19 school year. Finally, good bye to our Adler 5th Graders!!! You will be missed here at Adler Park. Good luck at Highland Middle School next year and make us proud as Hornets! However, never forget – Gators For Life!!!! I hope you all have a wonderful and safe summer and I look forward to running into Adler families around town these next couple months. We will see all of you back in August for our first day of school! Go Gators, Dr. Kerri Bongle Principal Adler Park School Dates to Remember:

During the week of April 30th – May 4th, students explored the branches of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) at Adler Park School! Each student in grades 1 – 5 was treated to three lessons involving STEM. Kindergartners were a part of STEM week this year with one session! Below is a description of the activities that each grade level experienced throughout the week! Please ask your child about the details of their lessons to find out more about his/her experiences! I had such a fun week exploring STEM with all of your children! I would like to thank our AMAZING AFA for financially supporting STEM Week. This year they purchased the brand new Chain Reaction Kits for our third graders! A special thank you to Wendy Bownas and Nicole Sesi for organizing the thousands of pieces from these kits! We are so lucky to have a parent association that values this experience enough to finance it! I’d also like to thank all the parent volunteers who helped throughout the week. Your assistance was invaluable in making this such a successful week for our kids! THANK YOU! Sincerely, Emily Weber GTE Teacher Kindergarten: The Recess Queen After enjoying the picture book, The Recess Queen, we looked at pictures of objects found on a playground. Students were challenged to design a playground and started by working as a team to create a plan. When their plan was complete, they used: straws, Q-Tips, plates, yarn, clay, pipe cleaners and construction paper to build their playgrounds! I was so impressed with the kindergarteners teamwork and creativity! 1st Grade: Picture Books Inspiring STEM During our first lesson, students enjoyed the book, Rosie Revere, Engineer. We then made paper helicopters with only a paper template and a paper clip. Students were then challenged to design a new paper helicopter that would fall more slowly to the ground than the original. On day two, students listened to Curious George and the Boat Race. They then had to create a plan with their team to use a bag of given materials to float five plastic monkeys. All were successful and came up with at least one design! Finally, we read the story, If I Were President. After looking at pictures of the White House, students were challenged to build their own White House out of different size notecards! 2nd Grade: Gingerbread Man Traps During our first lesson students listened to Gingerbread Man Loose in the School! Students learned about their challenge in a letter from Mrs. Bongle, and about all of the mischief being caused by the gingerbread men that were loose in our school! They were then able to use 20 credits to shop at the GMT (Gingerbread Man Trapping) Store. During students' next experience, they built their traps as a team and placed them in the school. Finally, students collected their traps and many of them caught gingerbread men! But why did some catch a Gingerbread Man and not others? We analyzed the factors that led to trapping these unlucky cookies and discovered that all the traps that had gold coins or jewels as their bait were successful! Mrs. Bongle then came to our room with a mysterious letter and treats from the head Gingerbread Man to reward all of the 2nd graders for their clever work! Thanks to the 2nd graders, Adler Park School is rid of their rascally cookie problem and were able to enjoy some gummy bears! 3rd Grade: Chain Reaction Inventions Students had so much fun working as a team to create various contraptions into one working Chain Reaction Invention! Please view these amazing inventions in action with the document link below: https://tinyurl.com/y9rt5fwe 4th Grade: Electricity Challenge We started our STEM exploration with three electricity challenges. Students had to create a working circuit with a bulb, a working circuit that operated with a switch, and finally a series and parallel circuit. On day two, students were introduced to their engineering challenge: design a four room house with four working bulbs that all operate on switches. Students were invited to bring in additional décor and miniature furniture to add the finishing touches to their house designs! 5th Grade: Newton's Second Law Students began their exploration of Newton's Second Law by filling a film canister with water and Alka Seltzer and using the acceleration of the film canister explosion with the produced gas to propel another film canister filled with different numbers of pennies along Hot Wheels tracks. Students were able to see that with more mass, there is less movement. During our second meeting, students were introduced to their engineering challenge: design an Alka Seltzer powered Lego car that will travel the furthest distance. In order to do this, students had to keep the forces acting upon their car in mind and go through the engineering process. I was so impressed with students tenacious and diligent teamwork as they all tried to create the best car possible! Our winning team’s vehicle travelled 185.5 cm and won a bag of Gummy Bears! Dear Adler Parents,
If your child has medication in the nurse's office, a parent will need to pick it up by Monday, June 4th at 1:15 pm. The only medication that a student can transport home in a backpack is an inhaler. Any unclaimed medications will be discarded. If your child will be attending Summer School, let me know and I will transfer those medications and doctor orders to Highland/Rockland. If your child will be taking medication(s) or will need medication in the nurse's office for severe allergies during the 2018-2019 school year, the appropriate form(s) must be completed and signed by the parent/guardian and also signed by your physician after June 30, 2018. The Allergy Action Form, Allergy Questionnaire, and/or Medication Authorization Forms need to be turned in to the school nurse by August 23, 2018. These forms are available on the school website. Click on "Resources", then click on "Health". If you have any questions, feel free to contact the school nurse. Sincerely, Kim Hutchinson RN Thank you to all the families that came out to Clucker's in Libertyville on April 30th. Clucker's made a donation of $250 back to Adler Park School! We really appreciate all the Adler families that came out and would like to ask that we continue to support Clucker's over the summer!
For our last Whole Class Enrichment lesson, all students in grades 1-5 worked as a team to create mystery mosaics as well as work on individual mystery mosaics with colored pencils! Our lessons started with an introduction to the mosaic art form and looked at pixels in digital pictures as another place where we find “mosaics”. In each grade level, the students, using a color key, stickers, and a huge amount of perseverance, placed stickers one by one onto a large poster. At first glance, we had no idea what images would be revealed! Students were challenged to use their visual perception skills to predict what the mystery picture would become. The final results were mind-blowing! This lesson shows us that with teamwork and a growth mindset, anything is possible! Please ask your child about this fun lesson!
Mrs. Weber GTE Teacher Good afternoon Gators -
